2012 Beach Soccer en la playa

This weekend Cancun hosted the 2012 Beach Soccer Worldwide tournament.  The event took place from the 10th-12th February at the hotel Royal Sunset’s Beach.   Hosting this event puts Mexico on the map as a beach soccer hotspot. Traditionally the event takes place in Puerto Vallarta but Ramon Raya, the Azteca National coach says ‘Cancun is a worldwide-known paradise, and it is undoubtedly an excellent resort to host this sport’s competitions. The combination between Cancun and Beach Soccer can only bring great things…”
Este fin de semana Cancún fue sede del torneo de Beach Soccer Worldwide. El evento tuvo lugar del 10 al 12 febrero en la playa del hotel Royal Sunset. Alojamiento este tipo de eventos pone a México en el mapa como destino de fútbol en la playa. Tradicionalmente, el evento tendrá lugar en Puerto Vallarta, pero Raya Ramón el seleccionador nacional del equipo Azteca dice “Cancún es un paraíso  conocido en todo el mundo, y es, sin duda, un recurso excelente para acoger las competiciones de este deporte. La combinación entre Cancún y  fútbol en la playa sólo puede traer grandes cosas … “

The weather was perfect for the players although a little windy.  A little cloud didn’t stop the hundreds of local fans flocking to the beach for the day where a temporary stadium had been built. Three bleachers had been erected and the noise was impressive, just like a real football match!
El clima fue perfecto para los jugadores, aunque un poco de viento. Una pequeña nube no impidió los cientos de aficionados locales que acudieron a la playa para el día donde  se había construido un estadio temporal. Tres gradas se habían sido erigido y el ruido fue impresionante, al igual que un partido de fútbol de verdad!

Four teams took part in the tournament – Mexico, El Salvador, USA and Spain.  Each team played three games, even going to penalties if there was a tie after extra time.  Mexico won their first two games so the last game on Sunday was Mexico V USA – the decider.

Cuatro equipos participaron en el torneo - México, El Salvador, EE.UU. y España. Cada equipo jugó tres partidos, llegando incluso a los penales si hubiese un empate en los tiempos extra.  México ganó sus dos primeros partidos por lo que el último partido del domingo fue México V EE.UU. - el partido decisivo.

  

There was a great atmosphere as Sunset guests came out to their balconies to watch.  But the biggest fan base was definately Mexico!  Everybody had a patriotic moment when the national anthem was sung.
Hubo un gran ambiente cuando los huéspedes del hotel salieron a los balcones a mirar. Pero la base de fans más grande fue sin duda México!   Todos tuvieron un momento patriótico cuando cantaron el himno nacional. 

With the traditional Mexican Wave and football chants it was no wonder that Mexico went on to win the cup.
All in all a great day out with cold Corona beers, iced water and hamburgers made to order.  It was fun for kids too, although a little noisy!
Con los cantos tradicionales de futbol y la onda mexicana  no era extraño que México pasó a ganar la copa.
Definitivamente fue un día divertido con cervezas frias, el agua helada y las hamburguesas a la orden. Fue muy divertido para los niños también, aunque un poco ruidoso!. G�<s
�� ��n> un gran ambiente cuando los huéspedes del hotel salieron a los balcones a mirar. Pero la base de fans más grande fue sin duda México!   Todos tuvieron un momento patriótico cuando cantaron el himno nacional. Con los cantos tradicionales de futbol y la onda mexicana  no era extraño que México pasó a ganar la copa.

SDI’s open water certification courses implement the use of dive computers in their courses – this is the most up to date way to dive and the safest.  No diving conditions are the same, when you are planning your dive prior to departure you cannot be sure of the conditions in the area that day.  A computer will ensure you can maintain the correct information at the time of diving and can then make any necessary changes to your dive time.
When you complete your course with Aquaworld our instructors will show you how to use your computer when you dive in the open water.

Tamales Time

Christmas is over, New Years resolutions are still fresh and we’re a month into the diet after all the calorie laden traditions of Mexico.  Well forget that, it’s tamale time!
Ya se acabo la Navidad, los propósitos de Año Nuevo todavía están frescos y tenemos un mes de dieta después de todas las tradiciones de México cargadas de calorías.
Bueno olvidemos eso, es hora de tamal!

In my previous blog about the Rosca de Reyes I explained that whoever finds the plastic doll in their piece of bread has to make/buy the Tamales on the 2nd February.
February 2nd (Day of the Candles or Candlemass Day) commemorates the 40th day after Christmas when baby Jesus was presented to the temple.   Some parts of Mexico celebrate with markets, parties, dancing and bull fighting whereas others simply dress a symbol of Jesus in special clothes and take him to mass.  Candlemass day also marks the middle point between winter solstice and spring equinox. (also known as Groundhog day in the States)
En mi blog anterior acerca de la Rosca de Reyes explique que aquel que encuentre el muñeco de plástico en su  rebanada de pan tiene que hacer / comprar los tamales el 02 de febrero.

02 de febrero (Día de La Candelaria) conmemora el 40 º día después de Navidad, cuando el niño Jesús fue presentado al templo. Algunas partes de México celebran con mercados, fiestas, bailes y corridas de toros, mientras que otros simplemente vestir un símbolo de Jesús con ropa especial y lo llevan a misa. El día de La Candelaria también marca el punto medio entre el solsticio de invierno y el equinoccio de primavera. (también conocido como ‘Groundhog Day’ en los Estados Unidos)

Tamales are a favourite here in Mexico and often eaten for breakfast as well as dinner.  Apparently they date back to the Ancient Mayans.
They are very versitile and can be eaten with savoury foods and salsas, with meat, cheese or chillies as well as a sweet variety with fruits.  The basic ingredients are Maseca (hominy corn) and lard or vegetable shortening.  The tamales are steamed or boiled in a leaf wrapper which is then discarded before eating.  Street vendors can be found on many a corner in Mexico with their huge metal pots steaming away. 
Los tamales son uno de los favoritos aquí en México y se come con frecuencia para el desayuno y la cena. Al parecer, se remontan a los antiguos mayas.
Son muy versátiles y se pueden comer con alimentos salados y salsas, con carne, queso o pimientos, así como una variedad dulce con frutas. Los ingredientes básicos son Maseca (maíz molido) y la manteca vegetal o manteca de cerdo. Los tamales se cuecen al vapor o hervidas en hojas que luego se descartan antes de comer. Los vendedores ambulantes se pueden encontrar en muchos calles de México con sus enormes ollas de metal humeante.

Just for fun in Cancun

Parque Kabah Cancun.

I thought I would share some pics of Parque Kabah which is located in the downtown area of Cancun.  This is a great place to visit if you’re in Cancun centro and stuck for something to do.   Located on the busy Avenidas Kabah and Nichupte, the park is so serene it’s hard to believe you’re in a bustling city.  This peaceful oasis provides the jungle type nature reserve that Cancun used to be.
Quiero compartir con ustedes algunas fotos de Parque Kabah, que se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad de Cancún. Este es un gran lugar para visitar si estás en Cancún centro. Situado en las concurridas Avenidas Kabah y Nichupté, el parque es tan sereno es difícil creer que estás en una ciudad tan transitada. Este oasis de paz proporciona la selva con jardines natural que Cancún era hace años atrás.

The  path that circles the eco-park is a favourite for runners (about 1.8km) and it’s a busy place early in the morning with the locals.  Park Kabah is a great place to spend a couple of hours, there’s a playground, a museum, picnic area and of course the pond which is now home to crocodiles – I saw two medium sized crocs and a baby.  Crocodiles in Cancun’s Nichupte lagoon are common but this is a great place to see them pretty close up – the area is fenced in so it’s perfectly safe.
What struck me as bizarre is that they share the pond with an abundance of turtles, geese, ducks and iguanas graze on the bank eating the fruit and lettuce provided by the park helpers.  I admit to googling whether crocodiles eat turtles and yes they can – not their food of choice apparently but hey if they’re hungry!
El camino que rodea el parque ecológico es muy popular para los corredores(1,8 km) y es un lugar muy concurrido por la mañana con los locales.   Parque Kabah es un gran lugar para pasar un par de horas, hay juegos infantiles, un museo, área de picnic y por supuesto la laguna que  ahora el hogar de cocodrilos - Ví a dos cocodrilos de tamaño medio y un bebé. Cocodrilos en la laguna Nichupté de Cancún son frecuentes, pero este es un gran lugar para verlos muy de cerca - el área está cercada por lo que es perfectamente seguro.
Lo que me pareció extraño es que comparten el estanque con una gran cantidad de tortugas, gansos, patos, iguanas se alimentan a la orilla para comer la fruta y la lechuga proporcionado por los ayudantes del parque. Admito que busque en google, y  si los cocodrilos comen las tortugas y que si se puede - no es su alimento de elección pero hey​​, hambre es hambre!

Coatis also inhabit the park, these are members of the racoon family and feast on just about everything!  So beware if you bring a picnic, do not leave it unattended and throw your empties in the bins provided.
Coatíes también habitan el parque y comen casi todo! Así que ten cuidado si te llevas un picnic eh!, no lo deje solo y tirar la basura en los contenedores.

Rosca de Reyes

Today, 6th January, Mexico celebrates ‘el día de reyes’ – the day of the kings.  The celebration commemorates the arrival of the three kings or three wise men.   Tradition dictates that children in Mexico leave their shoes outside filled with hay or dried grass for the wise men’s camels – similar to the idea of santa stockings and a carrot for Rudolph!

The next morning they receive a gift from the reyes (and the Christmas decorations can come down too)!
Hoy 06 de enero México celebra el día de los reyes.
La celebración conmemora la llegada de los tres reyes o tres sabios.  Los niños dejan sus zapatos afuera llenado con paja o hierba seca para los animales de los reyes.  A la mañana siguiente recibirá un regalo de los reyes (y ya podemos desarmar  el arbol de navidad también!) 

Another tradition of el día de reyes is the sharing of the rosca.  A rosca is an oval shaped bread which is covered with dried fruits, cherries and figs.   When the rosca is cut the lucky receiver will find a trinket inside their slice.  The plastic baby trinket represents Jesus hiding  from King Herod who planned to kill all babies who could be the Messiah.
Whoever is the lucky recipient of the plastic doll, has to buy the tomales for everyone on February 2nd.
Otra tradición del Día de Reyes es el reparto de la rosca.  La rosca es pan dulce que está cubierto de frutos secos, cerezas e higos. Dentro de la rosca hay unas muñecas de plastico que representan el bebe jesus.  La persona que encuentra la muñeca tiene que invitar los tamales el 2 de febrero.

Here at Aquaworld we are excited to offer TDI’s Air Diluent Closed Circuit Rebreather Diver Course..
What’s a Rebreather?
A rebreather is an advanced scuba device that allows you to recirculate your own air instead of using the           traditional form of diving where your exhaled air passes out through the regulator in the form of bubbles.  With a rebreather your exhaled carbon dioxide is removed and the whole process is measured by a computer to check the levels of oxygen inhaled.

¿Qué es un Rebreather?
Un rebreather es un dispositivo avanzado de buceo que le permite recircular el aire en vez de usar la forma tradicional de buceo en el aire exhalado pasa a través del regulador en la forma de burbujas.  Con un rebreather el nivel de dióxido de carbono exhalado se elimina y todo el proceso se mide por una computadora para verificar los niveles de oxígeno inhalado.

Why use a Rebreather?
*Use Less Gas!  As the gas is recycled the dive can be longer in duration allowing a 4 hour dive to a depth of 80ft.  There is also no need to decompress during the dive, there are no inert gases to decompress.
Por qué utilizar un Rebreather
* Usar menos gas! A medida que el gas se recicla la inmersión puede ser más largo en duración que permite una inmersión de 4 horas a una profundidad de 80 pies. Tampoco hay necesidad de descomprimir durante la inmersión, no hay gases inertes para descomprimir  

*Stay Warm! When diving in cold climates a rebreather can help you stay warm.  When an open circuit diver breathes air, it’s cool temperature means that the body also loses heat quickly.  With a rebreather the air is continuously circulated and recycled meaning it does not lose it’s heat.
* Manténgase caliente! Al bucear en los climas fríos un rebreather  puede ayudarle a mantener el calor. Cuando un buzo de circuito abierto respira aire, su temperatura fría significa que el cuerpo también pierde calor rápidamente. Con un rebreather el aire circula continuamente y se recicla lo que significa que no pierde el calor. 

*No Bubbles / No Noise!  This is great for photography and getting up close and personal to the marine life and fish.  Animals also react differently to you (curious and interested)
* No Burbujas / No Ruido! Esto es excelente para la fotografía y para acercarte a la vida marina y los peces. Los animales también reaccionan de forma diferente a ti (curioso e interesado). 

*Lighter Weight! As you do not have a scuba tank holding nitrogen, the tanks are lighter.
* Menos peso! Como  no tienes un tanque de buceo de nitrógeno, los tanques son más ligeros

*It’s cool!  Everyone likes new gadgets to play with and scuba divers are no different.
* Es genial! Todo el mundo le gustan los aparatos nuevos para jugar y los buzos no son diferentes. 

How can I do this?
With Aquaworld..  We now offer a Discovery Rebreather course which gives you a taster on how the equipment works and it’s benefits.
You can take the Discovery Rebreather with an open water certification.  We provide an hour’s theory lesson, an hour in the pool and then you’re ready for the open water dive.  Instead of taking a 2 tank dive, the rebreather discovery course will allow you to dive the entire length of the Cancun/Isla Mujeres reef area without resurfacing.  Your dive will be approximately an hour and a half to two hours of uninterrupted beauty!

Take the complete Discovery Poseidon MKVI certification course.  You must have 20 logged open water dives in order to take this course.
The certification includes theory training, confined water practice and 4 open water dives.  The course can be completed over 3 or 4 days.
You will learn about the history and development of rebreathers, mechanics of the system, gas physiology, dive planning and tables, emergency procedures and much more.

Wreck Diving in Cancun/Buceo en barco hundido

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to dive on a wreck?  I think we can all imagine that it would be creepy, scary, thrilling and breathtaking all at the same time.  Imagine penetrating a genuine wreck with only the sound of your bubbles to accompany the eerie ghostly atmosphere.  Shipwrecks always seem to touch a human being, whether it’s imagining people who may have fallen mercy to the seas, admiring the sealife that make the wreck their home or the natural collapse of manmade structures and creations.

Let your mind run riot whilst you make your way round the wheel house of a C-58 Mindsweeper, fantasize about the crew members and captain that once navigated this amazing 250ft vessel.  Nowadays the only life found within the two deck ship are live corals, an amazing variety of fish and other sealife.  Not to forget the schools of eagle rays that frequently populate the area.  You will be amazed as you dive amongst groups of over 25 eagle rays.
Deja volar tu mente mientras te abres camino alrededor de la sala de mando de un Mindsweeper C-58, fantasear acerca de los miembros de la tripulación y el capitán que una vez navegó aquel barco increíble de 250 pies. Hoy en día, la única vida que se encuentra dentro de la nave de dos pisos son corales vivos, una increíble variedad de peces y otras especies marinas. No hay que olvidar las escuelas de rayas que con frecuencia pueblan la zona. Te sorprenderás de que te sumerjas entre los grupos de más de 25 rayas.

  

Not actual boat, just an idea!

The C-58 mindsweeper was a US Navy vessel used in World War II , it was previously called USS Harlequin.  It was then used as a patrol boat by the Mexican Navy who sunk it deliberately in the 80′s in order to create an artificial reef.   Lying at about 75ft, the ship, also known as General Anaya was broken in half during hurricane Wilma in 2005 – which actually makes it easier to penetrate.  It’s also possible to swim around the entire vessel.
El mindsweeper C-58 era un buque de Marina de los EE.UU. utilizado en la 2ª Guerra Mundial, que antes se llamaba USS Arlequín. Despues fue utilizado como un barco de patrulla por la Armada de México, que se hundió deliberadamente en los 80s con el fin de crear un arrecife artificial.  Situada a unos 75 pies, el barco, conocido como el general Anaya fue partido a la mitad durante el huracán Wilma en el 2005 - que en realidad hace que sea más fácil de penetrar. También es posible nadar alrededor de todo el buque. 

If you’re a certified diver and visiting the Cancun area then this is definately the dive for you.  Aquaworld offers a 2 tank wreck/reef dive on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays departing at 8am.
The dive is recommended to experienced divers although advanced certification is not necessary.  The area has a strong current on the way down to the wreck.
The second dive visits nearby reef  areas such as Grampin or Punta Negra (depending on the weather conditions).
Si eres un buzo certificado y vas a visitar la zona de Cancún, este es definitivamente la inmersión para ti. Aquaworld ofrece un buceo de 2 tanques- barco hundido/arrecife, los martes, jueves y sábados con salida a las 8 am.
La inmersión se recomienda a los buzos con experiencia a pesar de certificación avanzada no es necesario. El área tiene una fuerte corriente.
La segunda inmersión visita las zonas cercanas, tales como arrecifes de Grampin o Punta Negra (dependiendo de las condiciones ).

Cancun Underwater Museum Latest News

Since our last blog about the Cancun Underwater Museum many exciting things have happened.
This year has seen the submersion of more sculptures created by 5 artists from 3 different countries.

A life size 8 ton cement replica of the classic Volkswagon beetle. The sculpture is designed specifically to house marine life whilst exploring the significant impact humans have had on our planets ecosystems and the subsequent affects to future generations. The VW beetle or “votcho” as it is known in Mexico is an iconic symbol and the classic shape was still in production until March 2003. Its rounded aerodynamic shape makes it perfectly suited to maintain stability underwater from strong currents and tropical storms.
Una réplica del clásico Volkswagen, a tamaño real y 8 toneladas de cemento.  La escultura está diseñada específicamente para albergar la vida marina y explorar el impacto de los seres humanos en nuestros ecosistemas y la afecta a las generaciones futuras. El VW o “votcho” como se le conoce en México es un símbolo icónico y la forma clásica se encontraba todavía en la producción hasta marzo de 2003. Su forma aerodinámica redondeado hace que sea perfectamente adecuada para mantener la estabilidad bajo el agua de las corrientes fuertes y tormentas tropicales. 

Other impressive sculptures have also since been added to the collection including Roberto Diaz’s ‘Musa Del Oceana’ and Jason DeCaires Taylor’s  ’La Promesa’.
Otras impresionantes esculturas también han sido añadidos a la colección como RobertoDíaz ’Oceana Musa Del ”y” La Promesa ”. 

In November 2011, two new works of art were submerged by Jason.
Time Bomb depicts a collection of bombs and mines designed to support marine life whilst symbolizing the critical future of our reef systems and the countdown of time we have to reverse the increasing worldwide decline. The works also portray the irony of weapons of destruction being used to support and nurture life. The various strata and textures of the constructions are designed to provide habitat space and protected areas for crustaceans and marine species.
Holy Man situated 4metres below the surface is propagated with over 150 fragments of Staghorn Coral (Acropora cervicornis). The coral colony was initially grown from a rescued fragment of “The Gardener of Hope” sculpture and then divided and transplanted onto the Holy Man, which is hoped will increase its coverage and overall biomass of the species.
En noviembre de 2011, dos nuevas obras de arte fueron sumergidos por Jason.
Bomba de tiempo que representa una colección de bombas y minas diseñadas para apoyar la vida marina,  simbolizan el futuro crítico de nuestro sistema de arrecifes y el poco tiempo que tenemos para revertir el deterioro cada vez mayor en todo el mundo. Las obras también retratan la ironía de las armas de destrucción que se utilizan para apoyar y nutrir la vida. Los diversos estratos y las texturas de las construcciones están diseñadas para proporcionar un espacio de hábitat y las áreas protegidas para los crustáceos y especies marinas.

El hombre santo situado 4m debajo de la superficie se propaga con más de 150 fragmentos de coral cuerno  (Acropora cervicornis). La colonia de coral se cultivó inicialmente a partir de un fragmento rescatado de la escultura “El Jardinero de la Esperanza”,  y luego se divide y se trasplanta en el Hombre Santo, que se espera aumentar su cobertura y biomasa total de la especie.

Aquaworld was pleased to host a local company’s Christmas party this week.  As the festive season aproaches many local companies hold  parties for their employees as a way of thanks for all their hard work.  These are called posadas and actually have  a more traditional meaning than a staff Xmas bash.
Aquaworld se complace en ser anfitrión de la fiesta de navidad de una empresa local esta semana. A medida que la temporada de fiestas esta encima, muchas empresas locales organizan fiestas para sus empleados como una forma de agradecimiento por todo su duro trabajo.  Estos se llaman posadas y en realidad tienen un significado más tradicional que una fiesta de Navidad del personal.  

The posada period begins on the 16th December and finishes on the 24th (Xmas Eve).  Nine days to correspond with the nine months of pregnancy.
Traditionally the celebration of the run up to Christmas took place within your local  neighbourhood where a party would be planned.  The hosts of the party act as inn keepers and the remaining adults and children from the local area are the pilgrims.   The pilgrims walk from house to house requesting lodging and are refused entrance until they arrive at the house where the party is held – the inn keepers then let them in after the traditional posada song has been completed.  Children carry poinsettias or noche buena as it’s known here, and the adults hold candles with paper holders.
El período de posada comienza el 16 de diciembre y termina el 24 (Nochebuena). Nueve días que se correspondan con los nueve meses de embarazo.
Tradicionalmente, la celebración de la víspera de Navidad se llevó a cabo dentro en su barrio, donde se planea una fiesta.  Los anfitriones de la fiesta actuan como posaderos  y el resto de los adultos y los niños de la zona son los peregrinos. Los peregrinos caminan de casa en casa pidiendo alojamiento y se negó la entrada hasta que llegan a la casa donde se celebra la fiesta - los encargados de la posada los deja entrar después de la canción tradicional de la posada que se ha completado.  Los niños llevan flores de noche buena y los adultos con velas.

Then the party begins with the traditional piñata and great food.
**interesting fact**  Traditional piñatas were made of clay!  Nowadays they are made from paper mache making them easier (and safer) for the kids.

Luego la fiesta comienza con la piñata tradicional  y una buena comida.
** ** Un  hecho interesante es que las piñatas tradicionales fueron hechas de arcilla! hoy en día están hechas de papel maché haciendo más fácil y seguro para los niños.
